Who is Sepulveda?

José Antonio Andrés Sepúlveda

Rap Lyrics

Dear Mexico, I Sepulveda Petition, Give me land from the Mission San Juan Capistrano,
Ask Governor Alvarado, Missions can’t run cattle, I got a business to run, you a new country,
YO…
Grant me the San Juaquin – the La Cienega de Las Ranas,
Make me the king, Mexico I’ll represent us!
Signed Yours Truly, José Antonio Andrés,

the Don Sepúlveda, god bless!

Prior to the year, 18-37,
California was run by the Mission System,

Mexican Independence, Mexico dismissed them,
Missions replaced, by the Land Grant System,

The Land Grant Rancho, The New Social Institution,
Native Americans, offered no restitution,

A Feudal Lord in Southern California now reigns,
Don José Andrés – Sep-ul-ve-da -- his name
Native Americans, once lay claim to the lands,
Serving Sepúlveda, rancheros, ranch - hands,

Sepúlveda’s Rancho, produced hides and tallow,
50,000 acres, to graze his cattle,
He even supplied meat to the 49ers,
Became so rich, you’d think he was the gold miner,

Se-Sse Sepúlveda, Se Se S S Se Sepúlvedaaa

He owned the finest horses, always dressed to amaze
He once threw a party that lasted 45 days,

March 21st, 1852,
Don Sepúlveda and Don Pico, rendezvous
“My Horse” said Pico “Never been beat”
“I challenge you to a HorseRace, on Alameda Street,

Sepúlveda known, as the finest horseman,
Said “Si Señor, Let’s bet our entire fortune?”

All of Los Angeles, attended the race,
To see which horse, will come in first place,

Pico’s horse Sarco, quite the steed,
Starts out the race, with the Early Lead,
Sepúlveda’s horse, catches up,
Sepúlveda Wins, Pico’s bankrupt.
Sepúlveda too, would lose it all,
Gambling their vice, it’s a dons downfall,
But On that day, with his horse Black Swan.
Sepúlveda made history, Pico’s fortune he won.

US Owns California now…
--
1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo,
US honors title, to Sepúlveda’s rancho,
Expensive process, Gambling debts,
Followed by a drought, Sepúlveda’s penniless.

Unable, to repay his debts,
Irvine, Bixby, Flint, split up his ass-ets,
Once upon a time, Don Sepúlveda had it all,
But every empire that rises, is met with a fall.

Dear Los Angeles, I Sepúlveda petition,
Let James Irvine take the rancho to division,
The wife and I will move to “El Refugio.”
Spend our dayysss, reminiscing about the rancho,

April 17, 1875,
That is the day, Don Sepúlveda, died,
At the ripe old age of 73,
Shit! LA I’m talking about me.
